The Basics Of Making A Smart Home

Having a smart home or even room is all the rage these days. From having lights that come on automatically to cameras in your fridge and even a camera in your doorbell. There are so many ways that you can increase the “smartability” of your home. Here at Absolute Home we love tech – here is our quick and easy guide to making a room or whole home smart.

Consider whether you need a Smart Assistant

In order to control your smart plugs and lights you might need to consider getting a smart assistant to help control these items. You would have heard of them before but they are: –

The Echo incorporates Amazon’s Alexa which allows you to to give hands-free voice commands to Alexa by saying things like. “Alex put on the living room lights” or Alexa switch on fan. There are other functions such as telling you the time, weather, news and even adding items to your shopping list.

The Google Nest or Google Home incorporates that Google Assistant that performs the same tasks as the Amazon Alexa. One of the benefits of the Google Assistant is that if you have an Android phone and you use Google Chrome and other software the assistant links in seamlessly. The only major difference is the software that runs the devices. Both the Echo and Nest will control a multitude of household items with a simple voice command

Another addition to your smart home will be a smart plug. These are fantastic and will allow you to switch on and off any appliance that you have connected to the mains. I use it in the Summer to start and stop the fan. You can use it for anything that you want such as a coffee maker, kettle or television. When the smart plugs are connected to your smart hub you can set a timer, get them to switch on automatically in the morning and off at night.
